Stern Grove Festival attracts people from all around the world and this summer my colleagues from Korea, Min Kim and Miso Kim, made a visit to San Francisco to experience the festival firsthand. I was quite honored when, a few weeks ago, I was then invited to participate in the Asia Pacific Music Meeting (APaMM) through the support of Korea’s Ministry of Culture, in Ulsan, South Korea. Stern Grove Festival was one of several music makers across the globe invited to learn about the sounds of South Korea and help cultivate the music market network for artists in the region. I was part of a panel featuring U.S. music festivals to discuss the challenges for international artists touring in the States.I felt very fortunate to be meeting with delegates from internationally renowned festivals like Glastonbury Festival (UK), Primavera Sound (Barcelona), WOMAD (New Zealand), EXIT Festival (Serbia), Australasian Worldwide Music Expo, Sound of the Xity (Beijing), Festival Timitar (Morocco), and so many more. We learned about each other’s festivals and shared our thoughts on the music and artists that inspire us.
The Asia Pacific Music Meeting coincided with the Ulsan World Music Festival, and the evening consisted of showcases of bands from all around the world on four different stages (including a performance by DePedro, who played at Stern Grove Festival in 2010). Once that ended, we took a bus (decorated in disco lights) to attend late-night showcases at a local bar called The Royal Anchor. I’ve come back inspired and ready to tackle the program for next year’s Stern Grove Festival!
The playlist here includes just a few musical highlights and discoveries from my trip. I hope you enjoy!
